## Expenses, shifts & cash

An expense paid in cash during a [shift](/guides/point-of-sale/opening-a-shift)
reduces the cash TillBiz expects in the [drawer](/guides/point-of-sale/cash-drawer)
at [close](/guides/point-of-sale/closing-a-shift). That's why recording expenses
as they happen keeps your cash variance accurate.

<Tip>
  Use consistent reasons or categories for expenses so your
  [expense reports](/guides/reports/sales-and-financial) group cleanly.
